train to st Moritz

I am staying in Varenna Italy for two nights in October and am wanting to go to st Moritz on the train for the day. My question is, can I buy my ticket at Varenna or do I have to buy it in Milan before I get to Varenna. I have heard that the train goes to Tirano and then another to St Moritz. I have heard that there may be a travel agent in Varenna whom I may be able to get it from as Varenna Esino is a small station.

The train from Varenna to Tirano is a regional train, so you just need to validate the ticket before boarding. I believe you can also buy tickets at a Tabac in Varenna. A reservation would be good if you want the expensive "Bernina Express" sight seeing train, but normal trains to St Moritz are not reserved. Check with SBB if there are any advance purchase discounts available

I'm not sure it's feasible to do it as a day trip - the R.S. Italy book says: "First, take the train from Varenna to Tirano, and then transfer to the Bernina Express train to St. Moritz (4/day, allow 4-5 hours with transfer; for details see www.rhb.chclick "E" for English.)" The travel agency in Varenna that sells rail tickets is I Viaggi del Tivano travel agency a block below the train station. I'd ask if anyone has done this as a day trip from Varenna.

I have done the reverse, St Moritz via bernina express transfer/wait in Tirano then on to Varenna to stay. It is a very long day. It is very scenic in parts. However to do this as a daytrip I think is too long and the schedules may not allow it anyway as well as being pricey.
There is a lot to see and enjoy in and around Varenna . you may want to leave St Moritz for another trip.
