train to rome airport

Staying in Rome for only one night in July and would like to stay somewhere that makes walking/touring easy but close to what I believe is a train that takes you to the airport. Is there in fact a train from Rome that will take you to the airport and, if so, where would we get that as we would consider staying close to that, if the area is okay.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. If anyone can recommend a good hotel - comfortable beds, that would be great. Thanks

There is a train to Fiumicino (Rome's main airport) from Roma Termini station, buy your ticket and be sure to validate it before you board. Trains leave every half hour or so, journey takes about 35 minutes. There is a dedicated track, I think it's #24, but check the departures board to be sure.

I don't stay around the train station area, but many posters here like it. Hotel Aberdeen gets good reviews here, as do several others.

We have always stayed in the Termini area. Aberdeen is a good choice but further away from the station. We prefer Hotel Sonya, three or four blocks across from the Opera House. And we have used Hotel Contilla for your situation. One block straight south out the side door. What is the time of your departure? As confirmed there is a train to the airport. A shared shuttle can also be a good option.

Mhoffman,

We also like staying near Roma termini station.

A few years ago, we stayed at Domus Aurea Hotel.

Our room was clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. The hotel staff were very helpful & nice.

Breakfast is great & served on the roof terrace.

The hotel is a 1-minute walk from Termini Station.
You can read about this hotel here: http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/domus.html

You can take the 'Leonardo Express' train from the airport to Roma termini & vice-versa.

If I remember correctly, once we got off the train from Rome, we had to locate a free shuttle bus to take us to the main international departure building which I believe is terminal 5.
When we were there in April 2013, the train fare was 14 euros from the train station to the airport. The staff at our hotel was kind enough to get us a private taxi from their location (walking distance to Termini) to terminal 5 and it costs 45 Euros for the three of us.

Took us right to the departure terminal and avoided the shuttle bus.

Hotel Tuscolana is a nice spot, one block from Tuscolana station. Trains to the airport every 15 minutes weekdays, 30 minutes on weekends. These are local trains, only 8 euro, but it takes 41 minutes to get to the airport because they makes other stops on the way.
Hotel Tuscolana is also 2 blocks from the Ponte Lungo Metro station.

The Tuscolana area is nowhere near the centro storico of Rome.

Paul makes the shuttle bus to Terminal 5 sound like a big deal. You get off the train, go to the front of Terminal 3 and the pick up point for Terminal 5, well marked, and the shuttle bus ride is about one minute. How many in your party?

You will want the Leonardo Express Train, to and from Rome Termini & Rome Airport, here is a link to some information: http://europeforvisitors.com/rome/transportation/leonardo-express.htm. Easy to purchase ticket at Airport train station, as mentioned above, validate the ticket in the yellow box prior to boarding. I believe the ticket needs to be used within 90 minutes of purchase, trains run about every 30min. I've stayed at the Aberdeen, about a 10min. walk from the Termini.

Which terminal in Rome you will depart from depends on the airline and the destination. Terminal 5 is only used by US and Israeli carriers for nonstop flights to the US and Israel. If you're flying somewhere else or with someone else, you will NOT use Terminal 5. Check carefully before going to the wrong place. Only Terminal 5 requires a bus (leaves from in front of Terminal 3, as you have been told); Terminals 1, 2 and 3 can be accessed by walkways from the Fiumicino train station.
