We are traveling from Rome to our hotel in Sorrento early Sept 2024. Train time tbd, we are flexible on time. Our stay in the area is short and I was wondering if taking the train to Salerno instead of Naples is a good idea so we can see some of the coast and possibly stop in a town along the way to Sorrento. We would hire a driver to take us to our hotel. Would the drive be along the coastline from Salerno to Sorrento? Should we take train to Naples or Salerno? Thoughts? Thank you.
A train from Rome to Salerno will have to go through Naples. So any trip to Sorrento via Salerno will be hours longer than going to Sorrento from Naples. The shortest driving route between Salerno and Sorrento would be overland. The coastal road is longer, slower, VERY twisty turny, and often almost gridlocked by traffic because it is a narrow 2 lane road. And really, the best views of the AC aren't from the road, but from the sea, on a ferry. How many days will you be in Sorrento?
Thank you. We are in Sorrento three nights. We'll most likely take train to Naples then a ferry down the coast another day.
Note also that the necessary empty-return of the car and driver (from a 3-hour trip) can be expected to double an already high price.
