Train tips from Rome

Any tips are appreciated on traveling by train.
Reservations best?
How far in advanced?
Etc.....

And just some train etiquette- board the train car number that corresponds with your ticket reservation. If you have large suitcases, quickly place them on the rack near the entrance of the train car and then walk to your seat. People behind are also trying to board and get to their seat. Smaller suitcases or backpacks can fit above your seat in the overhead open rack.

I usually purchase train tickets on-line about a month or two before my trip. I just use Trenitalia.com, but there are other choices, too.

Where will you travel from Rome? Are you looking for help with day trips or longer transfers?

There are two train lines, Trenitalia and Italo, the operate from Roma Termini and also Tiburtina station. Each train company has it's own website for purchases and each offers advance purchase discounts.

One thing to note: you must always use the Italian city name: Rome, Firenze, Venezia, for example.
