I am taking a train from Florence to Venezia Mestre arriving at 1 32. I will then catch a regionale to Treviso. How much time should I allow to catch the next train? First time there so not sure how much time I need. Also is there any lunch options at the Mestre area. Thanks kindly
Hi, Giangilberto from Milan, fifteen or twenty minutes is more than enough time, even with a suitcase.
You arrive on a high-speed train from Florence and then take a regional train.
These are two separate tickets, so if the first one is delayed, the second won't wait for you and isn't covered by a connection guarantee.
A twenty-minute delay means you’ll miss your connection and have to buy a new ticket, remember that a paper regional train ticket must be validated before boarding, whereas a digital ticket purchased for a specific time validates itself.
Mestre station has bars and a café inside, so you can easily grab a sandwich there.
My advice is, if you have the time, to take the regional train after the one immediately following your arrival.
A twenty-minute wait costs less than a wasted ticket.
Are you asking if you can book the 13:26 out of Mestre rather than wait for the 13:44?
I think the 3 minutes of the first connection is way too tight to count on. If you book the ticket all the way through Trenitalia it puts you on the 13:44 to Treviso and I think that's the right choice. If you are booking it separately for some reason the 13:44 is the logical choice. It allows your train to be a couple of minutes late, and the station to be busy and you can still wander to your track a couple of minutes before it arrives at 13:41. If you book the whole ticket through Trenitalia as one ticket they are responsible for getting you to your destination so if the train into Mestre was so late you missed your connection they are required get you the next ticket to Treviso to finish your journey.
Get the Trenitalia app and you can track the Treviso train and probably get its track number before exiting your train at Mestre.
Your instincts are right about the food on the trains. Even on fast trains the cafe car should be a last resort. I would pick something up in Florence and take it on the train with you - buy a beverage in the cafe car if you don't have anything. On the fast trains you get a tiny complimentary water and snack when you board and I believe and can sometimes buy beverages from the carts. (This might depend on class of travel.)
If nothing else the La Feltrinelli bookstore in Florence station has good sandwiches and other premade train foods for sale. If you plan to arrive early for your train then you can spend some of that time in line at the bookstore bar. It sounds odd but check out the food in the cases before you decide not to. They'll even make you a fresh squeezed mixed fruit drink it you want. I would eat on the fast train rather than the local regionale as they are generally better set up for it.

There are 3-4 trains per hour from Mestre to Treviso so I wouldn’t worry too much about changing trains. A Trenitalia Regionale online or digital ticket is valid for four hours from the scheduled departure time of your selected train. If you purchased the ticket for a train that leaves at 1:45, the ticket would be valid on any Regionali departing until 5:45. And the ticket is only 4.05€. There is no savings buying far in advance because Regionali tickets are not discounted.

If that is true than Trenitalia is truly an awful company. But as far as I know it is not true.
You just book a ticket "Firenze" to "Treviso". Just pick the schedule the planner suggest. Trenitalia will give you two tickets, one for the High speed train, and one for the regional train. The regional ticket will be pre validated for the regional train on your schedule, but if you miss that due to a delay you just take the next one. Trenitalia's management aren't monsters.
Wengen is right: when you buy a through ticket on Trenitalia's official site (i.e. from Florence to Treviso in a single purchase) the connections are always protected if you miss the 2nd train because of Trenitalia. They are not monsters and, most importantly, they must comply with EU regulations.
If you miss a Regionale train, you can freely take the next Regionale headed to your final destination. If you miss a train with reserved seating, you must get a new seat reservation for free at the red "Freccia" booths by the tracks.
It's been working this way for ages.
