If I go the Rail Europe website, I can purchase train tickets at a youth rate for my under 25 travelling companion. Trenitalia doesn't have that (unless I don't see it), so is it possible to purchase youth rate tickets at the ticket machine when we arrive (I don't buy tickets beforehand)? Thanks!

This time it will just be R/T between Rome and Florence.
Comparing the same train on the same day, the faster ones between Rome and Firenze, Trenitalia quotes 44 euros per person each way which is about $110 for 2 people with current exchange rate and Raileurope quotes $124 for one full fare and one youth discount, so the "discount" is wiped out by the added fees and you are still at a better cost buying your tickets from Trenitalia when you get to Italy.
If Trenitalia doesn't offer youth discounts, it's highly unlikely RailEurope will offer them, since they're just a reseller. Reviewing the RailEurope site, I found that, on Rome-Florence, it didn't matter if you checked 1 Youth or 1 Adult....the prices were the same...either $41 or $66 for a second class restricted ticket, or $55 or $87 for a first class restricted fare.
Also, you must pay a 10 euro reservation fee for each seat with the rail pass. This would add 40 euros to your pass.
