I have not traveled in Europe for 27 years. Can I still expect to get a seat on a train from Rome to Venice by purchasing it the day I need it? Or does it require more advance planning now?
I would suggest buying your ticket a day or two ahead of time while you're out and about in Rome, especially if the day you're planning to travel is a popular one. In October, we just showed up at the train station and tried to hop on the 9:00 a.m. train from Venice to Florence, and found out it was already sold out, along with the 10:30 train, and we had to hang around waiting until noon for the next available train.
Very helpful. Thank you!
We did this same trek in December. The 3.5 hour trip was on a train that required a reservation. So yes, it is helpful to get it the day before, at least. Then when you get on the train, try to be the first person on the train car, so you can nab luggage storage in the middle of the train. Lock your luggage together. The overhead bins will not accommodate airline carry-on luggage. Very small space. We saw many with great big huge bags/suitcases on their laps, as the limited storage racks in the middle got taken up after 8 bags or so.
The amount of luggage storage is dependent on the train and car design. The newer cars have more space that has been previous described. And the older equipment is generally on the cheaper trains - Regionals. So if your are taking the high speed to Venice you will have good luggage storage.
We went from Rome to Venice in March of last year and the train was packed even then. The ticket line for tickets in the Termini was out the door. We bought our in advance and are very grateful.
Very, very useful and helpful information everyone. Thank you! I will purchase in advance.
Just to note, we did take the high speed to Venice from Rome and experienced the limitations of luggage storage as I described above just this past November. Maybe it was just our train car?.......
