Train tickets Milan to Varenna to Milan

Should we be buying round trip tickets on line for our trip,to Varenna from Milan and then returnimg from.Varenna on 9/1. We would buy the 6:20 ticket ,retuning ticket from Varenna . We want to be at the Duomo in Milan at 8.
Is there an advantage or disadvange to buying ahead. I thought I read somewhere just get them at the train station in Milan, but we are wondering if it would just be easier to get them now online.

This is a local train and there are no reserved seats and there is no advantage in buying them ahead of time. Just be sure to buy your return ticket in Milan because, at least when we were there, there was no place in the Varenna train station to buy tickets. Be sure to validate (stamp) you tickets before you get on the train.

No, do not buy online. This is a regionale train, no discount for advance purchase.
You can buy your tickets at Milano Centrale station, or any other station with a ticket machine, at any time (on the day or before), one for each direction. The tickets will cost you €6.70 each way, and are valid on any train.
You must remember to stamp ("validate") the ticket before getting on the train. This is to stop you using the same ticket twice.

I see a 06:23 departure from Varenna-Esino, Arrival 07:38 Milano Centrale.
I looked his up on: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

It sounds like you'll be traveling to Varenna and back to Milan on different days. When you buy your tickets at the Milan train station, make sure each ticket is for the correct travel day.
