Train Tickets: Italy

Hello,
Thanks for reading. Is it possible to purchase train tickets in Italy for the day you want to travel at the train station? I know this sounds like a dumb question. I'm going to be in Rome from December 20 to 24. I wanted to take the train to Assisi and back to Rome on December 23, basically a day-trip to Assisi and back to Rome, but I can not make that reservation on TrenItalia or any other train travel website. It is showing no tickets for purchase.

I don't need good seats or seat reservations, just a ticket that will allow me to stand or sit on any train car. Is it possible to buy that sort of ticket at the train station a few hours or day in advance? I did that before to go from Florence to Sienna, but it would be comforting to me to know for sure if I can get from Rome to Assisi and back on December 23 without a seat reservation. I'm sure it's holiday tourism and traffic and that I should have made a reservation weeks or months ago.

Thanks for reading and any help.

Yes you can buy at the station on the day you go.
The reason you can’t buy online now is probably because the schedule after Dec 10 has not been released yet. Seats never sell out.

It doesn't look like those tickets are loaded yet. There's a schedule update the first week of December, but check in the next week or two as the fast trains may be loaded by then.

These are regional trains and apparently not on the schedule yet. There is a schedule adjustment about Dec 14 and regional trains don't show up until close to that date. Not to worry, the schedule usually does not change.

Right now, on Dec 9 there is a direct train at 8:07 from Roma Termini that takes 2 hours and costs 10.95 EUR. Direct returns are at 4:25 pm and 6:27 pm for the same price. Buy at the station from a vending machine and validate the ticket in the stamping machine on the platform before boarding. They are unreserved trains, just find a seat.

Seems you can check schedules and buy tickets using the TrenItalia app. No need to buy in advance since all trains a Regionale.

With the Trenitalia smartphone app you can save wasted time and possibly being hassled at ticket machines.

In 2019 the winter timetable change will be on December 14. The app and the site will show the trains at the same time, there is only on database to be updated.

Regionale trains can't sell out because there are no reserved seats, it's first come first served.

Regionale tickets purchased online do not need to be printed and time-stamped. The downside is that they can be used only on the booked Regionale and on the following ones running the same route within the next 4 hours.

You don't need to buy Regionale tickets at the departure station and on the day of departure. As well as Tobacconists and travel agencies, automatic ticket machines at FCO airport will sell you any Trenitalia ticket for any day of travel. This way you'd get a ticket to be used anytime during the picked day, but you must time-stamp it before getting on.
