train tickets in Italy

Do I have to buy the tickets in advance? I am arriving in Rome on Wednesday (June 29) at 5:30. I need to get to Florence that day. I am thinking about just going to the Rome train station and buy the ticket after I get there and get the available train.

No, you do not need to buy tickets in advance. If you are flying in that day, there is no advantage to buying early, especially if your plane or getting out of baggage claim or your flight has any delays. There is 1-2 trains per hour to Florence so even if the next train is sold out for some odd reason, you would not need to wait long for the next one.
