Train Tickets in Italy

I'm looking to purchase my train tickets from Civitavecchia to Monterosso prior to my trip this summer, however they are not available for July travel. Does anyone know when they are available? Also we are a group of seven, any thoughts on first vs. second class. I think the price difference is about $12/ticket.

Thanks Dennis

You might be able to book tickets now as far as La Spezia and pick up the regional tickets locally for the second leg. Or try about June 15.

It looks like tickets are available on Trenitalia.com for all of July. There is a 10 euro price difference between first class and second class per seat. I don't usually "splurge" for first class, but it looks like the only train on the schedule (as of today) departs Civitavecchia at 2023 and arrives in Monterosso after midnight. For a four hour train ride, I'd consider getting the extra room/comfort of first class if it doesn't cramp you budget. That being said, we took a train from Rome to Monterosso in 2nd class and it was perfectly fine. ( euro super economy fares are hard to beat!

I'm hoping and guessing that trenitalia has not yet loaded all of the schedules and fares for the later part of summer 2016. For example, I need to book a ticket from Florence to Venice in the later evening of June 27, and although those times show up, the tickets cannot be booked. And on July 1, there are NO schedules or fares for Verona-Orvieto, although if I inquire about Verona-Bologna, then Bologna-Orvieto, there is one possibility (a slow one) available. I've been checking on these schedules for several weeks, but nothing new has loaded. Is it time to just cool our heels and wait for trenitalia to slowly fill in the schedule? Thanks for advice!

The schedule change date is June 12 and regional trains in particular are not published past that point, but it can apply to other trains, too, as you're seeing now. There will not be only two trains from Civitavecchia to the Cinque Terre. So you do have to wait a while, sometimes until right up to that schedule change date.

So I guess the same will be true if I plan on purchasing the tickets through the ricksteves site, wait until mid-june?
