Train tickets from Varenna to Milan

We are planning a day trip from Milano Centrale to Varenna expecting to go back to Milan after dinner. The train station in Varenna is not manned. Should we buy the return tickets in Milan or is there a machine in Varenna to buy the return tickets?

If you know you are taking a day trip to Varenna, definitely buy round trip tickets in Milan. The machine is usually/often/always out of order, and while you can buy tickets at the travel agent down the hill from the station (when it's open), why create extra hassle? The tickets are for regional trains, so just be sure to validate them before use, in both directions.

Roger,

I've done that same day trip and it is a good idea to buy your return tickets in Milan as well (I normally use a Kiosk). You don't have to be concerned about which train you'll take back, as the tickets only become valid when they're stamped in the machine. DON'T forget validating tickets in both directions, as you could face hefty fines.

Roger there is a travel agency office just down the hill from the train station on the way into town that can get you tickets to anywhere, if things go wrong. Business hours.

We used the travel agency near the train station and they were very helpful

I've also used Tivano Tours, the travel agency in Varenna, and definitely agree that they're very helpful and offer professional service.

We are doing this on a Sunday and the Tivano Tours office may be closed. Perhaps is better if we buy a round trip ticket in Milan.

Roger,

It's a good idea to buy your return tickets at Milano Centrale.

When we were in Varenna this past October, the train station was under renovation, so perhaps this will include some
automated ticket machines, but it's best to play it safe & purchase your return tickets ahead of time.

Keep in mind that you will be taking a Regionale train to Varenna & these type of tickets are valid for 60 days from date of purchase.

Don't forget to validate your Regionale train tickets prior to boarding the train to avoid hefty fines!

Have a wonderful trip!
