I am trying to reserve tickets from Trenitalia either the app or web site. The tickets I am looking for are Sept. 12 from Rome -Florence- Lucca. I can choose the time and pick my seats but then I get the notice “we are sorry, an error occured. Try again later”. Is that because it’s too early to reserve?

No, if it was too early the site would show no results.
I guess it's because they are gradually uploading the new summer schedules before the June 10 deadline and you are trying to purchase tickets during the night, when the webmasters are working.
Now it's 14:00 and something: I have just made a fake purchase on September 12 and I could arrive till the page where you are supposed to enter your data and your credit card #.
Why don't you wait for June 12? The Florence-Lucca trains can't sell out and the high speed ones won't sell out 3 months in advance. Otherwise use www.italotreno.it/en .
I just got to the payment page for tickets on Sept 12 for the 9:50 departure from Rome Termini to Florence changing to a regional train to Lucca for 36 EUR.
