Train Tickets from Milan Malpensa Airport (Terminal 1) to Cinque Terre

We are traveling from Milan airport (Terminal 1) to Corniglia in September. I have the Trenitalia App. I have read on the Forum it is better to just purchase tickets at the airport and we can get a ticket right through to Cinque Terre. Is this the best way to go? We arrive at the airport at 9:55AM and hope to connect to the train from Milan Centrale to CT around 12:45PM. Don’t know of that is doable. Any help is greatly appreciated. I also assume we end up at Monterroso and will then buy the CT train/hike pass to get to Corniglia.

If you arrive at 9:55 would expect you to be able to take the 10:43 at the airport, which connects with the 12:10 at Centrale. Change in Levanto for Corniglia. See www.trenitalia.com

I would not buy in advance, as depending on the timing your fastest routing might be via La Spezia. Just buy a ticket to Corniglia when you arrive.

Thank you so much Wengen for the quick reply. I do see the option to go through La Spezia as well. I am a little nervouse because I see a couple options sold out already but there seem to be enough other possibilities for us to choose from. I will take your advice and purchase after we arrive at the airport on our flight from ATL.

Hi Tom. Yes, good advice from WengenK to wait and buy at airport when you know your timing. No, you don't need to buy a train/hike pass for that day. At airport, buy your train ticket all the way to Corniglia. Your ticket will include and show a connection in Milan, maybe in Genova, and also somewhere near CT, but it doesn't matter where; likely Levanto, Monterosso or La Spezia; depending on schedule. If La Spezia, you will back track to Corniglia, but that's fine, just a few minutes. When arrive in Corniglia, there will be a shuttle bus to take you from station up to town, should cost 1 or 2 Euro per person. Have a great trip!

tomn,

I would also recommend that you buy the tickets at the airport when you arrive. As you'll be using paper tickets, you must validate (time & date stamp) in the machines on the platform before boarding the train. If one segment is via express train (Intercity, Freccia), these have compulsory reservations that are specific to train, date and departure time. and don't need to be validated.

You'll first take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale (about 33 minutes). As I recall, the M.E. also has a route to Cadorna station so be sure to board the correct train. Which train you take from Milano Centrale to Corniglia will depend on which one you can connect with. If you can connect with the 10:43 airport departure mentioned above, you'll have one change in Levanto and will arrive in Corniglia at 15:19.
