I have gone online to two different websites, including Rick Steves’, and am unable to purchase train tickets for June. I get an error message.
Any ideas for why?

schedule for regional trains changes on or about June 10. Keep looking, the new schedule should be up soon. Freccia schedule is already good.
Ann - for what dates and routes are you trying to purchase? For regional trains, it is best to wait and buy in Italy, there are no savings for buying in advance, and there are downsides. Enjoy your trip!
The "error message" makes me think of a Credit Card problem. Trenitalia.com simply doesn't show trains after June 10 if they haven't been uploaded on the system, yet.
Alternatively you could have picked a CartaFreccia discounted fare, that's reserved to Trenitalia's fidelity card holders.
"Rick Steve's website" is simply a redirect to Rail Europe, and you want to stay away from them (sorry Rick). They do not show all the trains, only ones they can make money on. Go to the source, http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en, or www.italotreno.it for Italo trains. www.trainline.eu may also work.
But we need more info. Where are you going? What dates?
Nobody can currently sell most regional train tickets for travel June 10 or later, until schedules are published, even though those trains don't accept reservations. This happens every year and is no cause for concern.
No one web site sells everything and there is normally not much problem with Rail Europe "not showing all the trains" in Italy. However, I'm aware that their database currently is not showing regional trains to Vernazza, Corniglia, and Monterosso in the Cinque Terre nor selling the seat reservations that are required for Eurail passholders on most faster trains operated by Trenitalia. Given the number of rail strikes and holidays in France in May, I don't expect much progress from their IT department this month.
As a minor point, the Trenitalia self-serve ticket machines in the stations are super easy and fast to use. For regional trains there is no reserved seating anyway and are usually not much slower.
Do not purchase Regionale train tickets on line since those ticket come pre-validated with additional restrictions. Buy Regionale train tickets at the station via a machine or ticket window. BUT ---- those tickets need to be validated (time stamped) in a little yellow/blue/green box near the platform prior to boarding. Watch for locals doing it.
Thank you for all the replies, they are extremely helpful. We are traveling from Venice to Monterosso and then from Monterosso to Florence and finally Florence back to Venice. Are all of these trips considered regional?
I’m getting the flavor that I should just wait to buy the tickets until I get to Italy. Is that the best approach?
Venice to Monterosso - Connections often include a short leg by regional train, or at least you have more options that way. See schedules for June 9 or earlier to help predict which departure you may prefer. You might reserve now to travel as far as Milan or Genoa, or you can just wait on the whole thing.
Monterosso to Florence - Connections are often entirely by Regional and Interregional train, and you certainly have more options that way.
Florence to Venice - Normally a fast, direct, reservation-required train that probably is already for sale at www.trenitalia.com, if you're ready to lock in date and time.
trenitalia has just loaded summer month train info. I bought Pisa and La Spezia yesterday
