Train tickets Florence to Varenna

I see people making train tickets here in US months before travel. Is this necessary or can you buy your tickets just as easy after getting to Italy's? Landing to take train from Florence to Varenna worried I should make the tickets now for trip in June.

Thanks
Doug

Doug. I deleted my earlier reply as you will be a non registered user on trenitalia. Just follow the advice I gave to book the frecciarossa Firenze SMN to Milano Centrale leg upto 120 days in advance and get your Milano to Varenna regionale ticket at the station in Milan. Book the frecciarossa leg at www.trenitalia.com and make sure you receive an email with your pnr on it. You will need to show this number to the conductor.

The above French rail site can be used to book tickets to Turin from Colmar.

Doug,

I have the same question as Ken.

When you say this: "Landing to take train from Florence to Varenna worried I should make the tickets now for trip in June."

Are you flying into Florence then plan to go directly to Varenna or will you stay in Florence for a few days prior to taking train to Varenna?

Edit--I suppose the use of your wording ( "landing" ) is confusing my brain. I think I just need to go to sleep now.
Good night!

Hi Pricilla and thanks for taking your time. "Landing" was a typo should have been Planning. We are driving around area then dropping off the car in Florence.
Thanks

Doug,

I'm glad you figured it all out.

Make sure you purchase a return train ticket (assuming you will be returning to Milan) because the Varenna train station does not sell tickets.

Don't forget to validate your ticket before boarding the train!

When you board the train to Varenna, make sure you sit on the left side for best lake views.

Varenna is such a beautiful place!

Here is the website for ferry boat schedules: http://www.navlaghi.it/eng/c_illago.html

Have a wonderful trip!

There is a travel agency right near the train station in Varenna along the road walking into town that sells train tickets also. That is where I bought mine when I was there in October.
