train tickets

Is it possible to purchase train tickets at the Pompeii station for Sorrento or do they have to be purchased in Naples, and do we have to purchase the Naples leg or can we just purchase the Sorrento leg? We will be picked up by car at Naples and dropped off in Pompeii and don't want to be stranded in Pompeii after the tour. Thank you,
Leslie

You can buy Circumvesuviana tickets at any of the stations along the route. If the ticket window is closed, the train station bar/cafe (or any neighboring bar/cafe, for that matter) should be able to sell you one. You could buy your tickets ahead of time, but seats aren't assigned on the Circumvesuviana, so it's not like the trains will ever be sold out. It's kind of like the metro, everyone just packs into the train and it's only full when there is physically no more space to stuff another person.

The Circumvesuviana is a local train that runs from Naples to Sorrento making multiple stops, with Pompeii being almost exactly in the middle. You can buy tickets at any stop. So, in your situation, just buy the tickets in Pompeii, from Pompeii to Sorrento, when you're ready to leave. The tickets are cheap, by the way (the full run from Naples to Sorrento is only about €5).
