Train tickets

We are going to Italy in July of this year. Starting out in Rome and then going to Sorrento. We plan on taking the train from Rome to Naples and then a ferry, train or private driver from Naples to Sorrento. Should we buy our train tickets from Rome to Naples before we leave for Italy or when we arrive? We are a group of 6.
Thank you

If you are not going straight to Naples from Rome on the day you arrive then you should buy the Rome to Naples train tickets in advance to get the best price by buying directly with the two different companies operating the trains either
Italotreno at https://www.italotreno.it/en or

Trenitalia at https://www.trenitalia.com/.

You should book the party of 6 at the same time that way you to get seats in the same car.
Currently it might be too early to book for July 2020

Purchasing tickets before you leave, will save you money especially if you're lucky enough to purchase the super economy tickets.

Dates for July are not yet available, but should be loaded in the next month or so. All should be loaded by the second weekend in June.

jules,

Are you planning to travel directly from the arrival airport in Rome, or are you planning to spend a few days in Rome at the beginning of your trip? It's important to know that before making train suggestions.

If you're spending a few days in Rome before going to Sorrento, you can save money with advance purchase tickets, but you MUST be willing to commit to a specific train, date and departure time. The tickets come with compulsory seat reservations, and can ONLY be used on the one train listed on the tickets. If you board any other train (even by mistake), you'll be deemed to be travelling without valid reservations and face hefty fines, which will be collected on the spot! Also note that the cheapest Super Economy tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable once purchased. Choose carefully before hitting the "Buy" button!

You can buy tickets on the rail network websites or from resellers such as www.trainline.com (which sells tickets for several rail networks in Italy so provides one stop shopping).

For the trip from Rome to Sorrento, you have several choices......

  • Trenitalia high speed train to Naples and then Circumvesuviana, Campania Express, Ferry or private transfer to Sorrento. Of these, the trains are fast and the most cost effective but the private transfer will be both fast and easy, but not the cheapest. With a group of six with luggage, you'd have to find a transfer that uses a larger vehicle.
  • Italo Treno high speed train to Naples and then the Italo Bus from there to Sorrento. This would be a good option to consider (IMHO).
  • High speed train to Naples and then Ferry to Sorrento - this will take more time as you'd have to get from Napoli Centrale to Molo Beverello (which would probably require two or three Taxis), buy tickets and waiting time, about 40 minutes for the trip and then as I recall, an uphill hike from the dock up to Sorrento.
