Train Tickets

Is it cheaper to purchase train tickets in the USA before we go to Italy, or when we arrive in Italy, or are the costs the same? We plan on traveling from Rome to Sorrento, Sorrento to Florence, Florence to Cinque Terre, and Forence to Milan. We will be using IC trains, first class, not the fast ones.

Cheaper when you get there. Have you read Ron In Rome's excellent info on Italian trains? Riding the Trains in Italy

There is an advance discount called mini fares that are available if purchased early. The total number of these fares are limited so they can sell out. And the discount can be substantial but varies according to the train. The fare, if available, can be purchased as late as midnight on the day before your travel. Full fares are the same via the internet or walk up. No discounts are available on the Regional trains nor can they be purchased in advance -- and no reason to do so either. We find little advantage for first class on those trains and especially an IC.
