train tickets and family rate

My husband and I are taking our daughter, her husband and 2 grandkids to Italy for 2 weeks this summer. We'll be doing the Rome, Orvieto, Florence, Venice, Cinque Terre route. I have been looking on the Trenitalia site for info on tickets. They have a family ticket for up to 5 people that has a really good rate. Do any of you know how likely it is that we'll be able to buy these tickets once we get to Italy in mid-July? I'm trying to figure out a budget, and this would really save lots of euros. Thanks in advance for any info. Gail

Gail, I don't know about the Trentalia site and family passes, but I ended up buying Italy rail passes for my husband and I on RS website, instead of getting point-point tickets in Italy, and overall we saved around $100 US per person doing this. We got the saver passes, which gives us any 4 days of travel within 2 months time frame. I don't know if this would be beneficial for your family to consider-happy travels!

Karen, Thanks so much for the advice. I really hadn't looked into the passes since I had read that it's usually better to just get point to point. Now I'll take a look at Trenitalia and see how the prices compare for out family. Gail

Gail, if one of the kids is under 10 you will qualify for the family fare. It is usually available. Rail passes usually never pay off but check the prices. If your grandkids don't qualify as "kids" the saver pass will probably be the way to go.

The trip from Rome to Orvieto will cost about 59 euros with the family discount and one additional ticket. If you buy all your tickets when you get to Italy you may qualify for the 30% discount. It is dependant on how far in advance you buy them.

Thanks Donna, The youngest child is 9 years old. So I figured that we qualified. What I was unsure of is if these family rates "sold out" or were limited in how many they sold. So you really made my day. This family fare is really a good deal.
