we are doing 2 days in venice then train to florence for 2 days then train to cinque terr for 2 days ending with train to naples. is it wise to buy train tickets now or when we are there? is it always best to buy 2nd class tickets? would appreciate any tips/info about any of these trains. thank you

Hi. Check trenitalia.com; click upper right to get English. Use Venezia SL and Firenze SMN for stations. If your dates are after mid June, the schedule may not show; use a date in late May to get the idea. You will see that if you are willing to lock in an exact date and time, you can get a discount fare. Up to you whether the savings is worth being locked in to an exact train. You can always wait and buy at last minute in Italy for the 'base' fare. There is huge capacity on this route so trains rarely sell out. For train to CT, best to wait and buy when there since discount will be minimal. Most people are fine with second class; similar to but more room than coach on a plane. First class will be a little more room, quieter, few people, many empty seats. Enjoy your trip!
