Train tickets

We are traveling from Rome to Ct and then to Siena and back to Rome all via train. Do we need to book these now or is it okay to do once we are there?

The only advantage to advance purchase is the possibility of discount. Rarely do trains sell out so the risk of getting on a train is very low. If it is regional then there is no advantage since these ticket are not discounted. You can easily wait till you are there.

Rome to the CT will be a 5.0hr train journey. Most runs want to route you via Florence which is just fine. You will be on a high-speed from Rome to Florence. Another slightly quicker route is a high-speed from Rome to La Spezia Centrale where you will change trains for a Regionale for the short trip into the CT. Full fare is 67.30E. However, you can get a 29E mini-fare ticket on the high-speed portion of the trip (65E). However, with the mini-fare, you become locked into that specifc train, travel date and travel time. If you planning is good and certain, then booking early can work for you. If you want more flexibility, you can wait until you get there but the mini-fares are often gone by travel time.

Mini fares, if available, are available until 48 hours prior to travel.
