Train tickets

Several posts are saying to purchase tickets on line. In Sept 2-3, we will be in: Milan for 1.5 days, then Florence for 3 days, then
Venice for 4 days. Should we purchase our tickets on line with Trentalia or just use the kiosks when we get there? Thank U.

If you want a discount, you have to purchase in advance on trenitalia.com.

Sammee, One point to note is that tickets purchased on-line will "lock" you into a specific train and departure time. Should you miss that train for any reason, you'd likely have to buy new tickets at full price. You may find it very helpful to have a look at the excellent Ron In Rome website for details on the procedure to buy tickets on the Trenitalia site. Given the fact that your travel dates are only a few weeks from now, I suspect the cheapest seats will already be sold out. If you see the word Esaurita on the website, tickets are sold out. Given the short lead time, buying via the Kiosks is probably the easiest method. Note that there are no discounts for tickets on Regionale trains, so buying these in Italy is often easiest (DON'T forget to validate!). Cheers!

Ken is talking about the super saver fares. If you purchase the regular price fares online and miss the train you still have options. With the super saver you have no options and the ticket becomes worthless as Ken says. Donna

But there is no advantage to purchasing a regular ticket on line.

Check the Ron in Rome site - I think some of the super saver or mini fares are being discontinued anyway. I recently purchased many tickets at kiosks with no problems. Sometimes the machine will reject a credit card for no apparent reason, or will not accept cash, but in the cities you listed, you should have several kiosks to choose from. By the way, if you'll be in Venice for four days, you might consider the vaporetto pass, single tickets can add up quickly. You just have to scan the pass every time you use it.

The 'saver fares' remain, the names change...and change... Definitely spend time on the Ron in Rome website, including all of his info on train tickets (how to use the ticket kiosks, etc). You may still be able to snag some good discounted fares at this late date. If you decide to buy your tickets there, though, you can get them all at once, if your schedule is firm.

Thank U for all your help, everyone. I will definitely check out the Ron in Rome website, it has been 3 years since I've checked this and I do need a review.
