I will be in Italy this coming June. I plan on taking a roundtrip train ride from Venice to Milan. I'm going to stay in Milan one night and then head back to Venice to meet my sister there. Is it best to buy tickets months ahead of time, or can I buy them the night before?
Buy them when you get to Italy. You can't buy them here in the US. If you do, you'll have to go through RailEurope, which charges way more than the actual cost of the train ticket.
You can buy all your train tickets when you get to Italy. There are many trains a day and they never sell out. As previous poster says, you will have trouble buying the tickets from here in the U.S. Trenitalia does not take credit cards issued outside of Italy on their website. Once you get to Italy you can use your cc without a problem.

Make sure you read Rick's information in his guide books on how to read an Italian train ticket and don't forget to validate your ticket before you get on the train.
Thank you, everyone! This is all very helpful.
