Train Ticket Purchase in Rome Central Station

Generally I pre-purchase train tickets through Trenitalia, yet with uncertainty of airport landing punctuality and time to get through customs, I feel I must purchase train tickets (Naples Central Station) on the spot at the airport and perhaps at the Rome Central Station. At this point, plenty of seats are available on the Rome Central - Naples Central leg. What is experience in lines, hassle and time involved in purchasing train tickets in the airport and Central Station? Any suggestions?

Yes, I suggest you download the Trenitalia App to your phone and use the app to buy your tickets in real time when you know which trains you want. No standing in line required.

There is free WiFi at FCO, install Trenitalia's app and get a through ticket from FCO to Naples while walking to the airport station. If you want more time to change at Termini, make 2 separate purchases.
Incidentally the railway station at FCO is not different from all the other stations around Italy, you can purchase a through Trenitalia ticket from FCO to Naples either at the counter or at the ticket machines. Or a ticket from any station to any station for all Trenitalia trains running before December 11.
With a little luck you could land at FCO in time to take the direct FCO-Naples high speed train.

Hi Gregory. Others suggestion to use the app is good. But fyi I was in Italy last week and often just used the Trenitalia machines in the stations. Easy English option that walks you thru the process, displays train options & prices. Usually took 1 to 2 minutes to buy tix. Note that some machines take cash or card, some card only; it will say on front of machine. Enjoy your trip!

For those that replied, were you able to get seat reservations at the ticket machines as well, when routes required a reservation? I had the app on my recent trip, but always went to the counter for reservations.

Either you had a pass, or you got tickets on a re-seller's site or you were not travelling with Trenitalia.

There are only reserved seats on Trenitalia's Freccia and Intercity trains, so you can't get a ticket without a seat reservation. The way you make your purchase doesn't matter, the system can't issue a ticket (and a PNR number) without a seat linked to it.

There are no reserved seats on Regionale trains, again the sales channel makes no difference.

A ticket machine is just a simplified touch-screen PC that can run only one software: Trenitalia's app.
