Train ticket purchase

Heading to Italy in May on the 15th. When I arrive in Florence can I go ahead and purchase a train ticket to leave on the 21st to Manarola? We will be driving in from another location that morning and would rather not have worry about purchasing the ticket that day in case we have trouble getting back ito town and then traveling to the train station. Then all we would have to do is validate it before boarding. Also, I already purchased our train tickets online from Manarola to Verona. I ran off a piece of paper that I assume is our ticket. Do I just scan/validate the bar code in the machine when we depart? Thanks

Going from Florence to Manarola should be all regional trains, so no need to buy in advance. Just buy at the station. You already have your ticket to Verona, it must have a seat reservation included, so you do not need to validate that.

Yes, it does have a seat assignment. So when board, we will have no need to validate. Thanks for the information.

Mary, as mentioned above, most if not all of your trains from Florence to Manarola will be on Regionale trains. You cannot buy these tickets online more than 7 days out from the time of travel. No discounts or seat reservations either. You can eaily buy the tickets in the automatic ticket machine. I say "tickets" as you will receive one for each train that you will be on. Depending on the run, you should be on at least two trains and possibly 3 to get to Manarola. Each of these tickets must be validated in one of the little yellow boxes in the train station before boarding. Here's a link to a picture that de-mystifies the little yellow box. http://gyazo.com/2fa6f43eeb176e4689fe628c7a639645 For your paper ticket, it should contain a 6-digit PNR code. That's your ticket. No you don't have to stamp it. The conductor carries a wireless device and he enters the 6-digit PNR code into his system. The ticket should also contain information about your departure time, train number and seat reservations. Should your paper tickets contain one for a Regionale train, you won't have the 6-digit PNR code but you will have information about the train from Point A to Point B (most likely from Manarola to a nearby town to pick up the intercity to Milan). This ticket should say that it is pre-validated. Your good to go.
