Four of us will be traveling to Rome airport and taking the train to CQ for 5 days. After that we will travel to the Amalfi Coast (Sorrento) to explore Pompeii and Vesuvius, etc. for 5 days and follow up with the train back to Rome. Since we are using the train for transportation would the saver 1st class be worth it?
Probably not but you do need to do the math. If you are willing to lock into a fixed schedule far enough in advance, then the deep discount tickets are the way to go and far cheaper than a pass especially if you use 2nd class.
Rome-Cinque Terre -Naples-Rome
The Italy Saver pass in 1st class costs $200 per person for 3 travel days, plus seat reservations for about $35, which adds up a bit cheaper than full fare tickets along the coastal train route (about $265 at current exchange rates for 1st and Business, I looked them up just for fun, or the route through Florence costs more). However, if you're ready to reserve some trains ahead, then discounted rates at www.trenitalia.com can be less, available from 3 months before your travel dates. Naples-Sorrento is a separate railway and not part of the equation.
We looked at the Saver Pass too for our trip, which involves trains from Venice to Florence, Florence to Naples (on to Sorrento, but that does not factor in since that leg would not be part of the saver pass anyway) and Naples to Rome. For us, buying 120 days in advance was much cheaper than the Saver Pass.
