Train ticket online purchase problem

I tried buying a ticket from Siena to Milan and it won't let me choose ticketless with receipts, nor is there a self-service station where I can pick up the ticket in Siena. How do I get this ticket if I were to order online? What would you suggest would be the best way to go from Siena to Varenna? Thanks.

Karen, to do this, you will be on 3 different trains. Two of the trains are Regionales (Siena to Florence and Milan to Varenna-Esino). Ordinarily, Trenitalia does not sell Regionale tickets online farther out than 7 days from the time of travel. Recently, they have been doing this when the Regionale segment is combined with a segment that requires seat reservations. Many runs from Siena to Milan meet that requirement and you can see them online. I've gone through a dummy booking on the Siena/Milan run and I can buy it. I didn't see any option for ticketless or self-service as once I buy the ticket, Trentialia will send me an email and I can print my tickets out at home. What you will be looking for is a printout for the Florence/Milan segment with a 6-digit PNR number on it. One hint is to register on the website. There seems to be better results for travelers who register instead of proceeding with the purchase without registering. In Italy, the Regionale trains are like BART. You buy your ticket, get on and find a seat. If no seats, you can stand. The big difference in Italy is that you must validate your Regionale ticket in the little yellow machine in the train station.
