Train ticket for regional trains

When we travel from Florence to Lucca on a regional train do we buy a specific train time ( no seat reservation needed) or just the a general ticket for travel between the 2 cities? The flexibility would be nice as plans change. Are the tickets the same price if you buy them a few days in advance verses day of travel?

No discounts on regional trains no matter when you buy.
No seat reservations either.
They work similarly to commuter trains (like Caltrain in the San Francisco peninsula).
Buy the ticket at the station, validate (date stamp) it at the machines on the platform before boarding, complete your trip in the next 6 hours from the time of validation.
Do the same for your return trip.

You can buy regionale tickets days before you go, they are valid for a couple of months before you validate them and expire after a specific number of hours (usually six) after validation.

Often for short trips like this, you can even buy the tickets at the magazine/newspaper stand in the station (is that a tabaccho? - I know the plural is tabacchi!) instead of standing in the ticket window line.
