Raj, The main difference between first and second class seats is the "comfort level". For a good view of the differences, have a look at www.seat61.com/Italy-trains.htm#What are Italian trains like (you may want to explore other parts of that website as well). On trains which have compulsory reservations, all seats require reservations regardless of whether passengers are in first class or second class. The reservation will specify Car No. (Carozza) and Seat No. (Posti). If you're buying P-P tickets, the reservation will be included with the ticket. Happy travels!

Raj I often decide based on how long the trip is. Also ask my friends in the US how often they ride cummuter trains in the US. If they are comfortable on those they will be fine in second class. For baby boomer age although my friends have made their decision based on the pros and cons including price they often wish they had booked first class. (Sorry my "comma" key doesn't work so it is somewhat hard to read my response.) Bobbie

Generally I will travel 2nd class as the first class tickets can be somewhat expensive.
