Train strikes - Trenitalia v Italo - pre-purchased tickets

In following several of the threads about strikes, I cannot determine if it is advisable to buy well in advance (to save money) and take the risk of whether that day will have a strike or not - or wait until closer to travel and see what the "strike" mood is at the time...I get that some trains always (mostly) run even during strikes but how likely is it to get another train on the same day if the strike is on? Also, do the Italo trains strike when the Trenitalia ones strike???? Since Italo is private, I would assume the risk of strike is much less. Would pre-purchasing on Italo be a better option? Any thoughts or advise is appreciated.

Strikes are not an everyday occurrence. Rick Steves over-hypes it as if it was something happening every other week. It doesn't. Some years pass whole without major industrial action with strikes... Buy your tickets ignoring the risk of strikes months ahead. You can get full refunds in case it happens.
