Train strikes on June 3. Do I need to change my return date? Update: thankfully resolved!

UPDATE:
UPDATE: I have been working this from a couple of options. And one was to switch my flight. My husband has been working on that with Delta at home while I have been looking during Italian time at options at my end.

The great news is that Delta was willing to slide my day to fly home by one day, so I will be taking the trains on Tuesday and be able to get to Rome.

Our forum is always so helpful in cases like this, and I truly want to thank each person that looked at possible solutions for me! I hope I can be helpful in return for you, also!

Jean

I’ve been watching the list of planned train strikes, and these are all on June 3. That is the Monday that I need to take the trains from Spello to Rome to fly home the next day. There’s some train railway construction going on around Foligno, so I had planned to take the train to the Cortona stop to connect with the train heading south to Rome.

For those who know these strikes well, could you tell me if these apply to the route I would need to take? Right now, I can call the airlines, if needed, to change flights, but the seats are getting very limited. Hoping to make the change soon if it’s required.

Thank you so much fir your assistance! I have really been having a wonderful trip in Puglia & Palermo so far!

The train strike that was supposed to happen yesterday got called off a couple of
days ago, so that tells you a) the timeframe for final go/no-go on a strike is much
closer to the date than we are now b) you should not get too strung out by the
current strike date, as it may not actually happen.

Usually there are trains that are guaranteed to run even if there is a strike. This
strike appears to be scheduled from 9am to 5pm, so booking a train outside of
those times should be good.

Once you get to Spello or somewhere in that region, you might want to go to a
train station and see what the latest news is. If you have already purchased
train tickets, either they can change for you or advise if your ticket will be good
for any train that runs that day.

Finally, you might check to see if there are buses that run between Spello and
Rome.

I’m a bit stuck since there’s nothing running after 5pm where I would feel safe traveling as a solo person and being stuck in a tiny train stop - not city mid-way. Plus I need tobe in Rome to guarantee I can make that flight. Unfortunately, I can’t just back it up a day since the Spello Infiorate event is Sunday - the reason I am there.

I could check the bus option you mentioned if anyone knows one that goes that route.

Jean,

I second Shieflyer’s advice:

Once you get to Spello or somewhere in that region, you might want to go to a
train station and see what the latest news is.

  • Another option is to depart Spello on Sunday afternoon, once you’ve witnessed Le Infiorate, instead of waiting till Monday.

Hopefully you plan to be in Spello on Saturday, June 1st so you can see the artwork being done.

What go you mean by this? For which date?

I’m a bit stuck since there’s nothing running after 5pm

A lot of googling shows that there are direct flixbus services from Perugia to Rome at 2030 and 2050. In all likelihood it would be a taxi the 16 miles from Spello to Perugia. Those journeys are currently £13.99 and £7.99 respectively on the Flixbus UK site.

A quick look at the FSBusItalia Umbria timetable book (they apparently run almost all inter urban services in the Spello region) does not suggest there is a Sunday bus (at all?) from Spello to anywhere.

Omio and R2R appear to give false results in as far as I can determine.

I'll be totally honest- I do not know the area at all, but you are getting few answers. So this is just 45 minutes of googling- no more than I would do if I was there and in the same predicament of trying to write my own back up plan.

EDIT- I see the above is now superseded (well it is still a valid route and there are far more flixbus services from Perugia) now you have changed the date of your flight while I was researching, but I won't delete it as who knows it may benefit others.

Jean,
As you may already know there is no bus service in Umbria on Sundays, so your option is to take the E415 bus from Spello to Foligno, then the FlixBus from Foligno to Rome.

Alternatively, you may consider taking a taxi from Spello to Foligno since it’s a short distance and shouldn’t be that expensive.

Edited to add…
I just read your update, hadn’t noticed it till now! Was busy googling, hahaha!

Wow, it’s great that you get to stay in Italy an extra day, and thanks to Delta Airlines for allowing you to change your travel dates!

I’ll add the following information in case someone else is in the same predicament.
There are more time options for direct Flixbus service from Perugia to Rome, than from Foligno to Rome ( thanks to Stuart’s advice upthread!)

Enjoy the rest of your trip, Jean!
