Train Strike Sunday june 16 includes Pompeii train

So I am in Italy and just received email from ItaliaRail that our Rome to Pompeii direct train that only runs on Sunday is cancelled. With the train strike I am assuming there is no alternative to get there and back in the day (unless they settle before then). Anyone have any advice? Plan B is I guess to see more in Rome that day. Advice appreciated!

Italiarail is the ticketing company for Italy’s Trenitalia train company— the one run by the national government. Sunday’s strike affects Trenitalia trains nationwide and Trenord trains in the region around Milan.

Italotreno (“Italo”) is a private train company which is separate from Trenitalia and not subject to its strikes. Italotreno should have its high-speed trains running during the strike. Italo has a number of trains on Sunday departing Roma Termini train station and reaching Napoli Centrale in one hour or so. Tickets each way currently run about €39. You can check train schedules, fares and buy tickets at www.Italotreno.com and also at www.TheTrainline.com.

Once you reach Napoli Centrale, you can get to the “Pompeii Scavi” train station right at the Archaeological site of Pompeii in 30 minutes by transferring to the “Circumvesuviana” train line which is the budget commuter train for the region and is not part of Trenitalia, so its trains should also be running as usual on Sunday, These trains are not air-conditioned and the seating is not as plush as the high-speed Italo trains, but for a 30-minute ride that will get you from Naples to Pompeii and back— it does the job. Circumvesuviana trains depart roughly every 30 minutes.

Once you arrive at Napoli Centrale station on the Italo train, you’ll go downstairs to “Piazza Garibaldi” or Garibaldi train station. It sounds confusing but just think of it as a Metro system and you need to go downstairs to transfer to a different line at the same stop. A ticket on the Circumvesuviana train to the “Pompeii Scavi Villa dei Misterei” stop costs about €4.

Pompeii is a spectacular place everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.

Don’t forget your sunglasses, sunscreen, hat and water bottle.

Cheers!
