Train strike / Renting a car

Trying to make a backup plan for a possible train strike on June 3rd. Is it possible to rent a car in Italy without an International Driver’s License? Have my DL & Passport, but no IDL.

It’s our biggest day of train travel, Murphys law, of course, and with so many connections, I’m worried about coordinating the whole thing with trenitalia and “guaranteed” trains on the day of the proposed strike.

Headed from Cinque Terre to Bellagio. Would love & appreciate any advice. Thx!

Rental agencies may not ask for the IDP, but it is a considerable risk because if anything does go wrong, you face a significant fine without one. Some agencies do ask.
Best course is to investigate the ways to deal with a strike (not everything is cancelled), and have a backup plan.

I’m a couple weeks behind you, but I also have a proposed national strike - at least as far as I can tell from the official strike site - on my longest train travel day (17 June - Monterosso to Varenna). I booked a one way transfer through https://daytrip.com/ . It’s WAY more than I want to spend, but I can cancel it up to 24 hours before departure if the strike is cancelled. A door to door one way transfer might be something to consider! I cringe at the price tag (roughly $800 for 3 adults) but it’ll be money mostly well spent if we find ourselves in that situation. Good luck!!

Really appreciate the info and great advice. Yeah, definitely concerned about getting pulled over…figure that’s a 50/50 proposition with our lack of Italian road rules!

Bethanie, thanks so much for the recommendation and link. We’ll check it out. Btw, saw your from Tallahassee…my husband is a Nole ‘88!
