train strike on 24th Nov?

Hi guys,

I am first-timer to Italy. Planning to get on a MSC cruise on 24th Nov from Genoa. I saw from the official website:

https://scioperi.mit.gov.it/mit2/public/scioperi
23/11/2024 24/11/2024 USB LAVORO PRIVATO Plurisettoriale PERSONALE AZIENDE CHE SVOLGONO ATTIVITA' FERROVIARIA MERCI E VIAGGIATORI FERROVIARIO E TRASPORTO MERCI SU ROTAIA 24 ORE: DALLE 21.00 DEL 23/11 ALLE 20.59 DEL 24/11 Nazionale

this seems to be a strike affecting "RAILWAY AND FREIGHT TRANSPORT" (from google translate) on the 24th Nov.

Question: is it safe for me to buy an Intercity ticket on 24th Nov morning (from Milan to Genoa)? If not, what are my alternatives?

Thank you.

In case it helps, the English version shows the following for Nov. 24:

23/11/2024 24/11/2024 USB PRIVATE WORK Multi-sectoral STAFF OF COMPANIES THAT CARRY OUT RAILWAY FREIGHT AND TRAVEL ACTIVITIES RAILWAY AND FREIGHT TRANSPORT BY RAIL 24 HOURS: FROM 21.00 ON 23/11 TO 20.59 ON 24/11 National 10/16/2024 10/16/2024 4:42 PM

24/11/2024 24/11/2024 OSR ORSA RAILWAYS Railway MOBILE STAFF SOC. TRENITALIA REGIONAL BUSINESS DEPARTMENT PIEDMONT AND AOSTA VALLEY 24 HOURS: FROM 03.00 ON 24/11 TO 02.59 ON 25/11 Interregional 10/16/2024 10/16/2024 11:41 AM

I hope someone knowledgeable like Kenko responds to you. From my very limited experience, it looks to me like the Piedmont and Aosta Valley one should not affect you but the first one might. It is often hard to get good information until about a week in advance. You might look into traveling to Genoa on Nov 23 and spending the night there.

edited to add: It looks like there is a bus that take about 2 hours and 20 minutes and runs multiple times per day so that is an alternative.

There are Flixbus services at 0720 arrive 0930, 0815 arrive 1025 and 1030 arrive 1230. I would opt for the 0815.

Fares for all those services are currently £4.49 (just over US$5), before the booking fee, optional assigned seat fee and any extra luggage fee over your 1 assigned piece for the hold and your personal item for on board.

At Genoa the buses arrive at Principe Bus Station, across the road from the Railway Station.

Word from a very recent traveller (who has just done Inverness (Scotland) to Sicily on flixbus) which I have seen this morning- Milan Bus Station is a "dirty, smelly" bus station. Rather like Paris Bercy Bus Station but not rife with pickpockets like Bercy is.

So if you opt for the bus don't arrive too early

November 24 is a Sunday which means there will be no guaranteed Trenitalia Regionale trains. There may be guaranteed high-speed trains such as Intercity (IC) and Frecce trains. That can be researched on the Trenitalia website. The potential problem is the part of the strike involving freight trains. While you won’t be traveling on a freight train, it’s possible that freight trains idled by the strike will block passenger trains that travel on the same tracks. An idled freight train (or even just one carriage) can block passenger trains from going any further than where the cargo train has stopped. . Italian freight and passenger trains do share high-speed tracks between Genoa and Milan. Since Italian labor unions are required to file a written strike notice at least 10 days in advance—it’s also possible for more rail unions to file strike notices for November 24 between now and November 14. If I was starting a cruise from Genoa on the same Sunday as a scheduled train strike, I would play it safe as CD in DC suggested, and travel from Milan to Genoa on the morning or afternoon of Saturday, November 23.

Hi guys,
thanks for all the helpful replies. Am really grateful for it :)

Problem is few months back i have made a non-refundable apartment stay till 24th Nov. So looks like flixbus is the only alternative on 24th Nov.
From the flixbus website, i am looking at either
0815: depart Lampugnano bus station
1030: depart San Donato M3

I will be staying next to Milano Centrale station. Which is the easier bus station to get to from Centrale?

I know metro is one way, but I have an elderly with us so I not keen to lug our luggage on and off. And also squeeze with the rush-hour crowd?

Taxi seem to be the best way. Do taxis in milan go by meter? Is there any number that the receptionist can help me book? Any idea how much will the taxi fare to either bus station be like? We are 3 adults with fair bit of luggage.

Looks like Lampugnano is closest to Milano Centrale as it’s about five miles away. .The other location is 8.5 miles away. You might ask the proprietor of your accommodation in Milan how to arrange a taxi for the journey to Lampugnano.
Cheers!

I saw a similar postings for my travel days of Nov 8 and 13. I contacted Trenitalia and the told me there are no scheduled strikes for Nov.

Who or what to believe is very very distressing. I am making contingency plans.

I agree that it causes all sorts of stress. We were only in Italy for five days and strikes affected two of them, the two days that we needed to travel.

It cost us a considerable amount of money to change things and get drivers and so on. I have no idea if the strikes actually went ahead, I wasn't game to look.

It was a relief to get to strike free Switzerland.

When I was trying to keep up with the strike information in October, the sources I found helpful were: Kenko on this forum, googling news articles about upcoming strikes a few days before, trenord or Trenitalia websites a few days before, and the tourist information office (in Bologna). Currently, I see news reports on the Nov 8 strike saying that local trams, busses, and subways will be affected. This seems consistent with what the transportation ministry listing says and with what Trenitalia told Janet.

I also like trying to read a little about the issues . In a number of cases it seems to be contracts that were not renewed or promised increases that were not delivered.
