We will be flying into Florence on May 26, Friday at 2 pm. I understand there will be a nationwide transportation strike that day impacting all modes of transportation. We will need to get to La Spezia and ultimately Riomaggiore the same day. The plan was to take a train. Any advice is greatly appreciated. First time to Italy and strikes are a new phenomenon for us. I booked a car as a plan B, which is crazy expensive (close to $300 for one day). Thanks!
Check the list of guaranteed trains from both Florence stations and see if there is one calling at La Spezia that departs after 2 pm
Thank you! I understand there are also guaranteed time ranges (morning and evening) when trains run
Before 9 and between 18:00 and 21:00, but that's only for local trains. I doubt you can depart from Florence after 18 and arrive at Riomaggiore before 21 using only Regionale trains.
If you can find a guaranteed train that goes from Florence to La Spezia, between 18:00 and 21:00 you will find in La Spezia a local Regionale train to Riomaggiore.
As we land in Italy on June 2, I'm curious about the train strike situation.
How does it work there? Clearly it is announced when a strike will happen. But does the strike happen just one day at a time or does the strike begin on May 26 and continue?
We ran into this on a trip to France a few years ago, and the strike days were always announced; were not on consecutive days; and did not affect all trains on a particular day. It was really tricky to figure out.
June 2 is a national holyday. It would be like going on strike on Xmas day.
As a side note, They announce "when" and "how long". Telling people when a train strike begins but not when it's over would be quite pointless for travellers.
