Italian law requires labor unions to give notice of a strike, so they have for Oct. 20. Most of the strikes never happen as the notice is used as a bargaining tool.

I was wondering because when we looked at train tickets on October 19, 20 and 21 the notice came up.

We hold tickets for the 20th of October, and see no info about a possible strike. If it really happens can we rebook for the day before or after our otherwise non refundable tickets?

Hmm, I just purchased one of the two tickets I’ll need for October 20 yesterday. Guess I’ll need to find out more about this.

Thankfully, I bought a ticket that can be adjusted or refunded, but how on earth to get from Varenna to Milan and on to Venice if not by train?

Thanks for the heads up.

Depart from Varenna well before 9 AM and then take an italotreno train from Milan to Venice. Or book a guaranteed Trenitalia long distance train running that route.

Sorty, but who on earth would buy a refundable ticket months in advance?

Dario, my concern here was if the trains are not running due to a strike, how will I get to Milan. Yes, I plan to go to Milan, then on to Venice as long as the train is running. If not, I guess I’ll have to take a bus or rent a car. I’ll wait and see if there actually will be a strike on that day.

You asked why I got a refundable (or changeable) ticket. I did that because plans could change between now and October.

Would this also include the night ferry from Naples to Palermo?
