Major transportation strike Friday March 18

From ANSA

Two railway unions have called a 24-hour strike from 21:00 on Thursday
March 17 to the same time on Friday March 18, the Ferrovie dello Stato
State-controlled rail company said Friday.

Usually the high-speed trains still run on schedule, but not the regionale trains.

Just got word that ATAC, the Rome public trans company, will also be on strike except during rush hours, and the taxi drivers are on strike from 0800-2200. Fun day for all!

Thanks for the info. We are vacationing in Italy now and will take the regionale train on Wed from Ravenna to Firenze via Bologna. We'll travel to Parma on a high-speed train on Sat and then onto Milano on Sun. Please keep us posted with any new details. Thanks!

That sounds like more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

In March, just before Easter. Who'd have thought it....

It will be interesting to see if it disappears like so many or if it holds...

Nigel makes a good point....we've had a few strikes delayed recently, but those were ATAC only. This is ATAC joining the train unions, and the taxi drivers. Some buses still run, but you cannot predict them. Lots o' fun! I think we'll plan on walking everywhere.

I'm starting to see more news chatter on this thing. It appears than ferry and taxi services will be affected as well, and this report talks about a massive anti-Uber protest march in Rome and airport-access blockages:

Looks like a good day to just stay put!

and yet so many people advocate breaking the system and putting in uber. Who'd a thunk it?

we are in the last leg of our trip in Rome, we fly out Saturday at 6:45 am so I have scheduled a taxi to pick us up at 4:15 am. I am getting a little nervous, should we leave to the airport earlier?

tbliss, The sciopero ends at 9:00PM Friday night. All should be in order Saturday. Well, as much in order as things usually are. At that hour, you will get to the airport quickly on a Saturday with no traffic.

So... If we need a bus on Friday (actually two of them in Bologna) then regional train to Parma on Friday.... we may be a no go?
