Train Station Layout

We are planning to use the trains in Italy and would like to be familiar with the layouts of the various train stations we'll be switching trains in. Is there a website to see diagrams of the stations -- like the track layouts, the stairs, etc.

Dennis,

Not that I know of, but train stations are pretty much the same everywhere. The tracks are laid out in parallel to each other, and there are clear signs indicating the number of each track.

Steven is correct. You might google specific stations to see if that station has posted something. Train stations are much more similar to each other than airports. You really only have two designs. Major train stations like Termini have the track lined up side by side and ending at the station. Get off the train walk towards the station, find the schedule board, find the new track number, and head in that direction.

The small stations will have the trains passing through the station and that will involve stairs going under or over the track but the process is very similar. The first station may be a little confusing but after that -- no problems.

The main difference (in general) is between stations and terminals. A station is where the trains pass through on their way elsewhere. Some trains stop to load and offload passengers, but some just keep on going through, without stopping.

A terminal is where the track comes to an end. As a rule, terminals are much bigger than stations. Famous ones include Rome, Florence and Milan.

Stations can be pretty minor affairs. Do you know which ones you're going to use?
