We are taking a train into Levanto from Milan next week. The connection time to Vernazza, our destination, is only 6 minutes at the Levanto station! Does anyone have experience with this station - can we make a connection that quickly? We are new to train travel in Italy, and have been trying to read up. Any thoughts are appreciated.

What time of day? After 10:05 am, there is a train every 30 minutes. Your Regionale connection ticket should be good for the next train. Its only an 8 minute train ride. These trains just shuttle back and forth between Levanto and La Spezia serving the Cinque Terre towns.
If your incoming train is on time, should be no problem, the train will be sitting there waiting for you.

Levanto is a smaller station, and six minutes is more than adequate to make a connection. As with many Italian stations, you may have to go down into a transfer tunnel to change platforms (they tend to take a dim view of people walking across the tracks, for obvious reasons). If you did happen to miss the connection for some reason, not to worry as there would be another train along in a short time, so you wouldn't be delayed for long. The trip from Levanto to Vernazza is only about 10-15 minutes.
You'll probably be using Regionale trains on that route, so DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!

I don't know if this applies to your situation or not. But in the small stations with only a couple or maybe four platforms, we have gotten off the train and just stood there. Our train leaves and five minutes later the connecting train pulls in. We probably moved ten feet. Or walked across the platform - sometimes to a waiting train. Another time our train was a couple minutes late and when we got off there was train staff waving at us - hurry, hurry, or at least that is what I thought they were saying. Directed us (and maybe 30 or 40 others) down the stairs, under the track and up to the waiting train. As soon as that wave boarded, we were off. If it is a larger station like Rome, Milan, etc., six minutes would not be enough but Levanto is pretty small so you should be fine.
