Train station in Lake Garda (Lago de Garda) northern Italy

Anyone can help with how far and the cost for a taxi ride from the lake Garda train station (believed it's called: Peschiera del Garda) to sirmione, which is in the south part of the lake. Also need to fly out either from Milan or verona, which is easier and better to plan on. Last question: is 3 days too much to spend in the area? Thanks all for ASAP feedback.

Milan-Malpensa is a major airport. Milan-Linate is smaller but closer to the city. Honestly, I didn't even know Verona had an airport. You may find better fares from Milan and more frequent flights, but that may depend on where you're flying to.

I’ve flown out of Verona and if there is an acceptable flight for you to take - destination, cost, schedule - I would choose it instead of traveling to either of the Milan airports. There’s a bus from the Verona train station that runs directly to the airport.

It depends on where you want to fly to. We don’t even know where you are writing from. North America? UK? Australia? Dubai? Burundi?
People asking questions in this forum come from all over the world.

Milan Malpensa is the largest in Northern Italy and has multiple intercontinental flights. It is not close to Lake Garda.

Venice is another intercontinental airport with flights to North America (not as many as Malpensa but definitely closer to lake Garda).

Verona is the closest to lake Garda and has only flights within Europe, to various European gateways. If you don’t mind to connect in another European gateway, it’s a good choice (Verona is the Air Dolomiti’s largest hub, and Air Dolomiti is part of Lufthansa therefore lots of flights to Germany where you can connect to anywhere with Lufthansa).

Milan Linate is the Milan City airport more or less equivalent to Reagan National in DC. It handles only flights to the EU capitals and major hubs, and it’s 80% Alitalia flights, therefore prices are rarely great due to the scarce competition.

sydance,

If you're staying in Sirmione, there are two stations you could use - Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano. The latter station is closer to Sirmione by a few kM. As you'll be hauling luggage, I'd suggest using a Taxi to your hotel as the cost won't be too much. There are usually Taxis waiting near the stations.

I prefer to stay in Peschiera del Garda as....

  • the rail station is easily accessible so it's easy to get there and easy to move on to other parts of Italy.
  • it's not as touristy as Sirmione (IMO) and there are some decent hotels and restaurants.
  • it's an easy walk to the Ferry dock for exploring other parts of the lake. The ferries seem to offer more departures from Peschiera than from Sirmione.

Regarding which airport to use, that will depend on where you're flying to and what flight options are available to your home area. Verona is more of a regional airport so you'll probably have to transfer through a larger hub airport. You'll have a greater variety of international flights available from Milan / MXP.
