We were just told by someone who recently returned from Italy that there had been a rock slide, or something similar on the high speed track from Naples to Rome so service has been interrupted. Has anyone heard about this? My wife and I are on the Rick Steves tour to Southern Italy that ends on April 25th and want to take the train back to Rome.
Both Trenitalia and Italo are showing normal service for tomorrow morning.
Even if there was a problem, the train company would provide an alternative or work around -- probably a bus. Remember the users are mostly locals and not just American tourists.
The rock slide was between Caserta and Foggia, so affecting services to/from Puglia; I understand the line was reopened yesterday. In the next weekend there will be maintenance works with train cancellations along the Adriatic line, between Pescara and Foggia. No news of a landslide between Naples and Rome; in any case, there is an high speed and two ordinary lines between Naples and Rome.
Should a problem develop on any high speed line, traffic is usually rerouted on the spot on ordinary lines duplicating the itinerary, needing extra time and developing some chaos in timetables but never completely stopping.
