We are planning to spend two weeks in the Alps, ending up in Chamonix, France for the 11th & 12th night. I'd like to add on a two day trip to Cinque Terre after Chamonix, staying in Monterosso. Can I take a bus through the tunnel into Italy, then the train? I don't want to backtrack through Geneva on my way to CT.

Trains from Chamonix to Monterosso don't run through Geneva and neither do most trains from Switzerland to Chamonix. The backtrack point will be via Martigny. How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it. Some Italian schedules are not yet published past this week, so use a current date. If you take a bus through the Mont Blanc tunnel (www.sat-mountblanc.com), then you can catch a train at Aosta, Italy.
