I was updating my itinerary for our September to Amalfi and checking train schedules. On September 15 many local trains to Salerno are sold out, but not the direct trains. It makes me nervous. Planes these days are facing so many delays I hate to buy this far in advance and had planned on buying when we reached Termini. Any advice out there? Is there an event causing the sell out and direct trains are no effected? Do I just need to take a chance and buy a ticket, giving myself ample time? Insights? Experience?

Local trains never sell out. If all the seats are taken, you stand until one opens up.
I see only one of the many direct Freccia high speed trains sold out. Italotreno trains are still not for sale past September 10. For September 8, they are showing 10 direct trains a day from Rome Termini to Salerno.
THank you Sam Are direct trains every sold out?
Why is this link incorrect?
Don't know that website, but it is obviously a reseller. Use the websites of the people who own and operate the trains.
Trenitalia: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
Italotreno: https://www.italotreno.it/en
Just to make it clear -- local trains, commonly call Regionale, never sell out and never discount the ticket. So buy them when you get to the station. If purchased on line there are addition a restrictions on using the ticket. Buy it at the station, validate --- very critical -- and get the first Regionale train headed in the correct direction.
Why is this link incorrect?
Because they flag as sold out the cheap trains that can't sell out, while trying to re-sell you the tickets of the more expensive high speed trains. And none of those local trains is sold out on the official site! As a scam, it's so obvious that's almost cute
Trains are not planes, when a route routinely sells out train companies either add more cars or more trains, in both cases they make more money. If that helps, On the 15th of September school will be open and most tourists will be back at work. I doubt there will be crowds taking trains to Salerno on a working Thursday.
