Train Seating direction in Italy

Hi there,

Do anyone knows how do i determine the train seating direction?

This is because my wife will usually get motion sickness seating in a direction facing away from the direction of the train.

When i choose a seating plan, how do i determine which direction the train will moving?

Im choosing for:

Florence towards La Spezia
La Spezia towards Bolzano
Bolzano towards Milan
Milan towards Torino
Torino towards Tutsi

Most of those journeys involve several trains, some of them regional trains where there are no reserved seats. That is better, in a way, as you can choose your own seats when you board. But it may not last for the whole journey, as sometimes the trains reverse direction at particular stations. We have seen this at Bologna.

For the fast Frecce trains, the safest choice would be the two window seats on either side of a table, in First Class. That way, you can switch if you need to so she can have the forward-facing seat. And there will not be other people sitting next to you.

You really cannot determine direction as all cars are designed with an equal number of seats facing both directions and the car runs equally well in both direction. Stick to Regionale train because there is no reserved seating. Choice any seat you like. Depending on the car only the middle row of seats face each other and others all the seats will face each other so choose two seats facing each other and you can switch as needed.

If I'm not wrong, you are taking only 1 or 2 trains with reserved seats, for sure the train from Milano Centrale to Turin. Maybe another one from Firenze SMN to Bolzano and then the only direct Bolzano-Milan train, if you are ready to leave at 8:45 AM.

There are no intermediate stations on the Turin-Milan high speed line where a train can get reversed.

Anyway, why don't you always book two facing seats and switch when/if you need it? It should be an option in all classes, check before wasting money in 1st class.

Otherwise your wife could simply seat at an empty place in the right direction. No one will care.

Out of curiosity, what's tutsi?

Many fast speed trains reverse direction during their travel; any train calling at Milano Centrale, Firenze SMN, Roma Termini and Napoli will reverse there. Also trains arriving at Verona P.N. from Milan or Bologna direction Brenner will use high-numbered tracks and will reverse there. As so many trains reverse direction one or more times, the reservation system was never programmed to take care of travel direction. The best you can do is reserving two facing seats and switch places with your wife if the train reverses.

Thank you Lechera,

Seems like there are impossible to determine the direction. Hence booking sit facing each other is the best bet.

Yes. For example, a standard Torino-Salerno Frecciarossa or Italo high speed train switches its direction four times in its trip. You could not sell a place in a fixed direction.

Thank you for the reply.

I have another questions.

The ticket that i bought from La Spezia to Bolzank require to change 2 trains.

First change is at Pisa Centrale and the second change is at Firenze.

I only have 5 minutes of transfer time from the Frecciosa to the Regional train at Pisa Centrale. Is that enough time?

The change at Firenze i have 30minutes.

A regionale will probably wait a delayed FR a few minutes, but 5 minutes are not so many. You have to move quickly.

Except for the Regionale ticket that are never discounted, the only reason to purchase the other tickets early (on-line) is to take advantage of any discount that might be available. However, discount tickets come with restrictions -- basically no refund, no change. It is rare for trains to sell out so the need to purchase early for that reason is low.

Hi, I book all of my train tickets a couple of months ahead of time. Look up your route for this week and also out 1-2 months, and you will see how much of a savings you can receive by purchasing ahead of time. Yes, those are non refundable, so you are committing to a specific train, similar to purchasing a flight. No need to buy the Regionale tickets ahead of time; they’re the same price.

If you are travelling before June 11 keep things simple and use your actual day of travel.

The walk-up fare is called BASE on trenitalia.com and once published it doesn't change. You can't pay more. Note that trenitalia shows the price per group, not per passenger.
