I'm totally confused by the Trenitalia website. Can someone please decipher for me the best and fastest way to get from Venice to CT (or La Spezia?).
Thanks much

If you check on earlier postings on the Graffiti Wall you will see that this subject has been discussed several times. The two connections I am aware of between these two cities are either Bologna or Milan. Expect the entire trip Venice to La Spezia to take about six hours.
If you only need timetables and not fares, go to www.bahn.de. Click on "Internat. Guests" to view the site in English. Enter Venezia Santa Lucia and La Spezia Centrale (or one of the CT towns). After you get summary timetables, click on "Details for all" to see the connections. For even more detail, click on "Show intermediate stops" for each route.
There are two train routes from Venezia Santa Lucia to CT. One route is Milan/Genova and then south into CT. You will most likely change trains in Milan. The second is Bologna/La Spezia. You will most likely change trains in Bologna. We did the reverse from La Spezia to Venice. If you are going to La Spezia, we recommend a Eurostar (ES) from Venice to Bologna. You'll need to reserve seats. From there, you will probably have to connect to an InterCity (IC) or Interregional (IR) train for the remainder of the journey. There are some routes that will take you through Florence and Pisa. We purchase all of our tickets point-to-point while in Italy about 2-3 days before travel.
Oops, forgot. Depending on where your are staying in Venice, it may take you anywhere from 20-40 minutes to Vaporetto to the train station. Water taxis are 80+ Euro so plan carefully.
Thanks very much!

The www.bahn.de website is awesome! Thanks so much for the tip!! I had no idea that the trains stop so often! To anyone else researching train routes, try Tim's suggestion.
