Train(s) from Milan's Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Florence S.M.N. Starion

Hello, we will be arriving MXP at 12:15PM on Sat Ap 26 from JFK.
What is the typical time frame to clear customs at MXP?
Would the most timely train transport to Florence S.M.N. be the Malpensa Express to Milan Centrale Station,
and connecting to a 3:15PM Trenitalia train ? That's only 3 hours from arrival at MXP. I'm concerned that we might miss the 3:15PM connection.

All suggestions will be appreciated as we've not yet traveled on the Italian rails!

Richard Gordon

Nobody can predict if your flight will be on time or how long it will take to clear customs (not long generally). However there are at least two train an hour from Milano C to SMN so don't worry. I wouldn't buy a discounted ticket the day of arrival. Too many variables and discounted tickets aren't refundable. I would buy the ticket upon arrival.

Thank you Roberto. Is the Malpensa Express the best way to get from MXP to Milano Centrale Station?

I prefer the MXP Express to get to Milano Centrale, the airport is fairly far from the central train station, so a taxi would be pretty expensive. Roberto is right, buy your ticket when you get there, too many delay variables and lots of departure time options.

What Customs? Do you mean Passport Control? Last year I flew to Zurich first and had to go thru Passport Control only. I did Not go thru Customs at Zurich. Then when I got to Firenze Airport I got treated like a piece of the furniture lying around. I was expected to find the taxi stand and go away.

I went thru Customs only when I returned to the USA.

Yes I meant Passport Control since we are originating from the US (JFK).
You are spot on.

Just to add the above replies (which I agree with): there are two trains at Malpensa Airport. One goes to Milano Centrale (the one you want) and one goes to Milano Cadorna. From Cadorna, there are no trains to Florence, so make sure you don't go there by mistake.

Just to ad that we used Italo Train while in Italy and thought it was a great service and the site works very well
