Train routes around Italy

We are traveling from Milan to the Cinque Terre (Monterosso). Any suggestions on how to get there? Also, we are then traveling from the CT to Sorrento. Again, what is the best route? After Sorrento, we are traveling to Rome. (I'm assuming this should be a easy train ride) Any suggestions on that route??? I love this travel helpline!!! Thank you!

A few weeks ago, I travel from Sorrento to Rome, then Siena, CT, Genova and Nice. South to north. Your are going the other direction, North to south. From Milan to CT (Monterosso) should be easy. You can Take the IC, no train change. Maybe a train every couple of hours. From CT to Sorrento. Your have to get to La Spezia first. Thirty minutes from Monterosse. Than I think you have to go to Florence, ( change train) Rome, Naples. Then change to local train to Sorrento. Your maybe able to find different route. But I think this is the fastest one. IC or ES. From Sorrento to Rome, you can take local train to Naples, and then change train to Rome. Or you can take the bus. 6:30 in the morning and get to Rome by 10AM.
Have a good trip!

At 12:05 there is a train departing Milano Centrale that goes directly to Monterosso with no train changes, arriving just after 3 in the afternoon. (15:02). The train is IC 665. There are others, some with a change in Genoa or elsewhere. You can see the routes and schedules on Trenitalia.com. I am sure someone else will be able to help with Sorrento; we have not been there.

Train, Train, Train. Lot's of them. Something Americans are not used to. Except for the train journey between Naples and Sorrento, you can see all of the runs you need on www.trenitalia.com. For the moment, as Trenitalia still needs to ubdate (intentionally misspelled) their schedules on June 12, use a date between tomorrow and June 10. You'll see all of the runs. The train run from Milan to Monterosso will take at least 3hrs. If you are coming in from Malpensa, add another train and another hour. Several runs during the day. Some with no train changes - others with 1-2 train changes. See the Trenitalia train schedules. For the CT to Sorrento, you can take the train from Monterosso to Naples on Trenitalia. You will most likely be on three different trains for this journey. Journey time is 6.5hrs-7.5hrs depending on the run you choose. From Naples, you have two choices - Circumvesuviana train or ferry. Add another 1.2 hours to your journey. Overall, it will take you about 8.0hrs-9.0hrs to get to Sorrento from Monterosso. No faster way either. From Sorrento to Rome, reverse on the Circumvesuviana train back to Naples, go upstairs at Naples Centrale and catch the Trenitalia train to Rome. About $200 train fare per person for the entire journeys you describe above (includes the Eurostars from the CT to Naples and from Naples to Rome). After the Trenitalia schedule ubgrade, you can onto the website and get the mini-fares, which are great discounts on the Eurostars, if you are ready and willing to lock yourselves into firm departure dates and times for your tickets.

Mike's post, while I know it is serious, is the most Tweet-like post I have seen. I can just see somebody tweeting that (change the date, of course). Sorry, Mike, a bit'o'fun....

We're doing the same. trenitalia.com, of course, is where you start. From there I saw that was in IC train (faster intercity) that would go from Milan to Sestri Levante, then I would switch to the local train to CT. So, for our date of travel, I booked from Milan to Sestri Levante on the IC train. Did it for 11 euros, the mini fare. From there it will cost 3.5 euros to get to Vernazza. Milan to CT, 14.50 euros. Cool.

Susan, The train that Lola suggested is the easiest and fastest trip from Milan to Monterosso (travel time 2H:57M). There are others, if the departure time isn't convenient for you. For travel from Monterosso to Sorrento, the method I'd use is to travel from Monterosso to La Spezia, and then use one of the "fast" trains to Napoli Centrale (one change at Roma Termini). There are numerous trains from La Spezia to Rome every day (travel time ~3H:45M) so you should have lots of choices. When you arrive in Naples, walk downstairs and take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. Note that there are several lines, so be sure to board the correct train. Sorrento is the last stop on the line you'll be using. On the return trip, use the Circumvesuviana back to Naples and then ES / AV to Rome. It's very easy. Happy travels!
