Train route from Rome to the north

We are staying in Rome for four days in early October. We depart Venice 12 days later. We plan to spend time in Cinque Terra, Florence, Tuscany, and Venice. What do you think is the most efficient way to take the train. Rome to Florence to CT, Rome to CT to Florence? Of course, we would also welcome thoughts on how what towns to stay in CT and Florence. Thanks.

Walt, how do you plan to see Tuscany? By rental car? By local bus? By train? By day trip from Florence? This would help plan the intinerary. Meanwhile, here are thoughts to consider. 1. Rome to Siena by Train. You can see many of other Tuscan towns with a rental car if you want. Just turn in the rental car before departing for the CT. (Or, you can drive it to La Spezia Centrale but the rental car place is not near the train station). You can take local buses from Siena to San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Val d' Elsa, etc. but you won't see all as the buses don't run that frequently. On Sunday, they run much much less. 2. Siena to the CT by Train. You'll probably route via Empoli, Pisa and La Spezia although most train routes want to take you to Florence first. Visit CT towns. 3. CT to Florence. Visit Florence. You could have visited Florence first but the main train routing from the CT to Venice is via Florence so you would just be backtracking a bit.
4. Florence to Venice.
