Between Napoli and Sorrento is a private commuter railway called the Circumvesuviana. You need to change from the train from Rome, slow or fast, in Napoli. Use Trenitalia (but no Circumvesuviana info, they go every few minutes) or for easy reading the Bahn website. This question is very popular here. If you search the archives you can find lots of previous postings.

Donna, As Nigel mentioned, there are frequent trains from Rome to Naples. You can find the schedules and fares at This website (current second class fares range between €10.50 - €45, depending on the train). For travel between Naples and Sorrento, you'll use the Circumvesuviana which can be reached by going down to the lower level of Napoli Centrale. You can have a look at the schedules and fares on Their website. The trip is 1H:05M and the current fare is listed at €4.00. Note that the Circumvesuviana has several different routes. Be sure that you board the train that travels south. Sorrento is the last stop on that line (on the map, it's shown as the "yellow" line"). Happy travels!

As you can see from above, there is no direct train from Rome to Sorrento. You have to be on at least two different trains. To make matters worse, these two trains are on two different train systems. The train from Rome to Naples is a Trenitalia train. The train from Naples to Sorrento is a Circumvesuviana train. Both stop at the Naples central train station albeit on different levels. If you want something direct, there are two bus lines that have morning and afternoon service from the Rome-Tiburtina train station to Sorrento. Mazzori and Curreri. Mazzori only runs during the summer months.
